trouble with names

Hi,

there are some warnings about copy and paste text with named text on it?

If I duplicate a text component, I see in 'Name editor' the names are duplicated too. But if I try to manage those names duplicates, for examples trying to delete some names, Ragtime crashes.
If I Copy and Paste a text with named text, I see the names are copied too, but when I try to use the names, those referre to different part of text.

It is a know problem, or I can try to send a report to Ragtime Support?

Thank you

f.

Dear Fabrizio

I have tried with RT 6.5 (1811) under OS X 10.5.6 and cannot reproduce the problems you reported.

My starting point:
A new document with some text in a text component (Text 1), part of which was given a name (Textpart).

I have tried the following:

1 - copied the whole text and pasted it at the end of the text in the same text component. The same name appears a second time in the "Names"-window. If I don't change the name of the second entry a reference to the name will produce an error message, but not a crash. Of course, if I want to really use the second name in a reference, I must first change the name of the second entry.

2 - duplicated the text component in two different manners - option/dragged in the inventory / Duplicate command for the container in the layout - both with the same result: (in one case the name window needed to be closed and re-opened in order to be updated) The same name was shown under the second text component. Again, the name must be modified in order to be used in a reference.

All attempts to delete names were successful. In no case RagTime crashed and in all cases the references produced the correct results (of course, only after changing the names in the "Names"-window).

Regards,
Thomas

Uh, quite strange. I tried to create a new simple document and -as you said- there is not the bug I reported. But in the complex document I'm working with, the bug is simply reproducible. I don't know what to do.

From your message I understand that I need to change identical names even if they are in two different components?

Thank you for the answer.

Yes, of course. The reference to a name is not "component/name", but only "name". How should RagTime know which one of the names with identical name you are referring to? All names have to be unique - even if they are in different components.

A side remark: The same applies to the inventory and components. Component names have to be unique, even if the components with identical names are stored in different inventory-folders. Why: Because references are ignoring the folders and a reference has to be unique in order to be resolved by RagTime.

Thomas

Right. The "name editor" windows shows names by component, but is not possible the inverse (from a name understand what component I'm referring to).

About my problem, I begin to fear it could be related to the index bug I reported some times ago. I copied the text component in a new blank ragtime document. So with no identical-name problem. And ragtime is still crashing.
And If I ask to show the 'index entries editor' in this new document, I got an error.

In my original document I have 5 index entries I cannot delete for the index-bug. So I fear this somehow is corrupting my document. But I have no idea how to delete those 5 index entries and restore my original work. Any suggestion welcome.

Thank you again for the info...

Deleting the entries in component, the 'index entries' are deleted.
But ragtime still crash if I try to copy in another document my text component and after delete a name... it was not related to index problem.

last update: the index bug most probably corrupted my document.

If I drag and drop my text component in a new document, links are working, but if I delete a name-target, Ragtime crashes.
If I copy and paste my text component in a new one, I can delete the names (!), but all the relationship between names and text is scrambled, the links are all broken.

I think I can not make nothing about this.

Perfectly reproducible on my two Intel Macs. I will prepare a bug notice
for the developers.
